Hello friends, hope most of you are still working from home. Well as a result of locked down, we were forced to have online meetings and I also attended many meetings and training programs via ZOOM. I came across many mistakes we tend to do while attending or conducting a zoom meeting due to lack of experience. Today I’m going to give you 10 tips to be awesome on zoom
- Position your device at eye level.
Other people will see you through the camera of your device (laptop/mobile). Most people tend to look down at the device as they keep it on a table below the eye level. This doesn’t make you look good on the other end. Keep a pile of books on the table and place your device at eye level. Then you will look awesome.
- Dress up.
You must be on your comfortable t-shirt and sweatpants or even in your pajama all day. I’m sure you have not dressed up for a while as you were stuck at home. Take the opportunity and dress up for your zoom meeting. Wear something crisp and bright color so that you will be a pleasant sight for the others. Comb your hair and put a little make up (If you are a lady). Trust me you will feel much better yourself. It’s true that only your top half is visible to others, but please dress up completely. In case you are requested to stand up, you don’t want to look like an idiot wearing a shirt with just an underwear.
- Make sure there is enough light projecting on your face.
You definitely don’t want to look like a ghost on zoom. If you are connecting in the night, make sure your room is well lit up and if you are connecting in the day time, make sure your windows are open so that there is enough light around you.
- Keep your microphone mute unless you are speaking.
This is very important because your microphone catches all the noise around you which can be really disturbing to other participants. Unless you keep your microphone mute, everyone will hear you clearing your throat, your dog barking, your kids screaming and even the vehicle honking on the lane. Save everyone the trouble, keep your microphone mute.
- Be mindful of your background
When your video is on, your colleagues could see not only you, but also your background. Make sure you don’t sit in front of a pile of cloths, a disturbing wall poster or an open door where your family members would be walking by. Try to sit in front of a plain color wall, a nice wall picture or a nice background out of your window.
- Switch off video if you want to move.
Your movements could be very distracting to others. If you really want to get up and walk away, if you want to use your device for some other purpose or you have to move and look around for something, make sure you switch off the video. You can switch it back on when you are settled down.
- Be mindful of your posture and hand gestures.
Remember, everyone on the meeting can see you. So try to behave the same way as you are physically at a meeting. Sit up straight so you project yourself smart and confidant. Avoid any unwanted hand gestures like touching your face unnecessarily, cleaning your teeth or picking your nose.
- Try to use non-verbal communication methods available.
In a zoom meeting you have the virtual options to clap or give thumbs up to the speaker. You can also use the option “raise hand” if you need to speak or want to ask a question. Otherwise you can nod your head or smile to show you are engaged. Use these options to show that you are engaged with the speaker/host without switching on the speaker and making various verbal reactions.
- Avoid unnecessary communications
We usually tend to speak to each other before or after a meeting to network. This doesn’t work well on zoom because everyone can hear everyone. So try to make your personal communications with your colleagues outside the zoom. You can always call or text people.
- Solve your technical matters before the meeting start.
If you are new to zoom or if you are not very comfortable with the technology, inform the meeting host and make sure you join a little early. This will give you time to solve your technical difficulties and get used to the software without interrupting the meeting proceedings.
Hope above 10 tips to be awesome on a zoom meetings will help you to be a pro at your next online meeting. Share this with your colleagues, team members and friends to have a productive, uninterrupted zoom meeting.
